Elon Musk recently announced his plans to reenter the world of AI with a project he believes could be the "best path to safety". His idea is to develop a rival Large Language Model to OpenAI, sparking an arms race that involves not only tech giants like Google and Microsoft but also several startups. So, what exactly is TruthGPT?

For those familiar with OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, the name TruthGPT may sound similar. In an interview with Fox News's Tucker Carlson, Elon Musk clarified that he intends to create a "TruthGPT or a maximum truth-seeking AI". His goal is to develop a safer and more regulated Language Model that genuinely comprehends the universe.

While Musk previously provided funding for the development of ChatGPT, he was never in favor of the profit-oriented direction the company had taken.

What We Know About TruthGPT So Far

As of now, the concept of TruthGPT is still in its early stages. Speculation has been rife since the registration of X.AI in March. Elon is listed as the sole director, with Jared Birchall serving as the secretary.

  • According to Business Insider, Igor Babuschkin, an AI senior engineer from Deepmind (along with other potential recruits), has joined TruthGPT as the head of operations. Igor has previously worked at OpenAI as well.
  • Reports suggest that Elon's recent acquisition of Twitter may also play a role in the project. The Financial Times has stated that Twitter data could be utilized to train the X.AI Large Language Model.
  • Furthermore, Business Insider claims that Elon recently purchased 10,000 GPUs from Nvidia specifically for this undertaking.

If TruthGPT indeed comes to fruition, it is expected to directly compete with ChatGPT.

Is TruthGPT Associated with Elon Musk's "Everything App"?

Some time ago, Elon Musk hinted at his plans to develop an "everything app," which gained significant attention following the registration of X.AI. Twitter was recently merged into a shell company called X Corp, and we all know Elon's affinity for the letter X.

While this concept is separate from the recent AI endeavor, it is possible that an everything app could incorporate APIs related to the Large Language Model.

An apt comparison for this potential "super app" is the Chinese sensation, WeChat. WeChat seamlessly integrates various functionalities such as payments and socializing within a single app, something yet to be replicated outside of China.

Is There a Release Date for TruthGPT?

At this stage, TruthGPT remains only a whisper of possibility. However, recent developments strongly indicate Elon's deepening involvement in the field of AI.

What Is X.AI?

X.AI is a newly-founded company by Elon Musk, believed to have been established to compete with OpenAI and similar entities.
